about Brazilian Waxing

Instead of illustrating this section with lots of photos of scantily clad models, we've adorned it with some of the many paintings hanging on our walls by resident artist, Xavier T.  We hope you like them.

A Brazilian Wax is the removal of hair from the genital region, and it's a service now equally as popular with men and women, young and old, straight and gay, professional and blue-collar.

Brazilian Waxing enhances the erogenous sensitivity of the genital area.

People also book treatments because they wear skimpy clothing or simply because their partners prefer it.

There are dozens of reasons, but whatever the case, clients agree that it looks better and feels much cleaner.

waxing tips & tricks

- Wear loose fitting clothing to your treatment.  If you are receiving a Brazilian Wax, ensure that you wear undies made of cotton so the skin can breathe, or alternatively, wear none.  Don't wear silks or satins until the skin has calmed.

- Use a proper after-wax lotion for at least a day after the treatment, and again when regrowth begins to appear.  A bottle of Melaleuca costs about $10 and will last ages.  Extra tip: It's great aftershave too.

- After a wax, avoid chlorine pools, saunas, the gym, and hot tubs until your skin has calmed down, to minimise the risk of inflammation.

- Sweating will increase the recovery time.  If you live near a beach, a swim in salt water is great.

- Avoid colognes and antiperspirants until the skin has calmed down.

-  You can also make a saline wash using half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, and pad it over the area.

- Do not exfoliate the waxed area until it has calmed down completely.  Your skin may return to normal quickly or it could take 48-72 hours.

- As regrowth comes through at about the 3 week mark, gently exfoliate each day then follow with Melaleuca lotion.

- Waxing Treatments should be spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.  Your hair should be at least 5mm long for the wax to grip it.

Is Waxing Permanent?
No.  Over years, waxing may have a general thinning effect but if you stop waxing, it will return to its previous state.

If you want to look into a permanent solution, look at our IPL and sPTF Hair Removal treatments.

How much does waxing hurt?
As a general guide, the feeling is like being slapped with a plastic ruler and fades quickly.

Follow up treatments, if spaced less four to six weeks apart, are gentler than the first, as the hair doesn't have time to fully redevelop.

Will my therapist be male or female?
It's a funny subject that defies all logic.  Everyone has different attitudes and it's strangely geographical.  So this is how it works.

In our Brisbane studios, you will usually have a female therapist BUT we understand that some of our clients, both male and female, prefer a male therapist.

To that end, Steven and Andrew float between the stores to cover that need, predominantly in the evenings and on weekends.

Andrew also services Southport three Mondays and two Saturdays a month, and other times when the demand is there.

So basically, in southeast Queensland, if you specifically want a therapist of a particular gender, please tell us when you book.

In contrast, the overwhelming preference in Central Queensland is for a male therapist, so we don't have a female on staff there at all.

Andrew performs all treatments at Reef Rockhampton and also conducts the mobile service to Biloela, Monto, Blackwater, and Emerald.

If I get a Brazilian, will it increase sensitivity during sex?
Yes, dramatically.  The difference is amazing.

I'm worried that I'll get aroused during my Brazilian treatment.
Don't stress.

Whether you're male or female, a degree of arousal is common when someone is working in the genital area, be it a doctor, a nurse, or a waxing therapist.

It has little to do with true arousal and more to do with adrenaline.  In any case, once the waxing treatment begins, the sensation quickly passes.

The only thing you need to focus on is feeling comfortable with yourself, and that includes not beating yourself up over a reaction that's perfectly natural.

Can I get "extras"?
No.  It is unacceptable for a client to ask one of our Therapists to "do something extra" or for them to "accidentally" feel up the Therapist during the treatment.

Both male and female clients have been guilty of this in equal measure, but thankfully it is rare.

Our staff have the same right as anyone else to work in a safe and happy environment without being menaced by sexual predators.

I've had a Brazilian before and they made me wear a g-string.  Do I have to?
For safety reasons, girls must wear a disposable g-string to prevent wax going where it shouldn't.  Guys however, do not wear a disposable g-string.  There's no point - We're waxing what it covers.

Also on a male, there is a lot more skin.  It needs to be stretched firmly.  We do not agree with the general policy in the industry that a male client has to hold his own skin tight, and nor that they should somehow do it through a fabric layer.

It's crazy and dangerous and it's why so many guys get bruises and skin tears at other places.

It also gives an untrained Therapist an excuse to blame the client when something goes wrong.

We realise that our safety policy conflicts with our competitors, but commonsense will eventually prevail in the industry, and our system will become the norm.

Our focus is on client safety, not the timidness of under-trained therapists.

Will I have to get on all fours to have a Brazilian?
No.  A lot of places still ask clients to get on their hands and knees but we have no idea why.

We'll do our best to preserve your modesty at all times, and you won't need to get into any strange positions at all.

Can you do a waxing outcall to my home?
Unfortunately no, it would make the treatment too expensive.

Wax pots take around 40 minutes to heat up, and we would have to charge for that time.

If we preheat the pots, then we risk spillage during transportation, which again is a costly (and messy) affair.

Can I book a spray tan for after my treatment?
Unfortunately no.  The after wax lotion will create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution.

Ideally you should leave the after wax lotion on, then come back in a day or two for tanning.

Can I go to the solarium after my treatment?
Definitely not.

You should avoid heat following a wax treatment and solariums take heat to the extreme.

Also, the chemicals in solarium tanning lotions will inflame the skin after waxing.  Leave 2 to 3 days between waxing and solarium tanning.

It should also be said that Reef Beauty does not agree with or condone the use of solariums or any other UV tanning device, even after that time.

A salon told me they were Body Sync Certified.  What does this mean?
Until 2006, we offered training in waxing to other salons and they would send their staff to us.

The therapists then receive a certificate upon completion listing details of their particular level of skill.  Any therapists making the claim that they trained with us are usually happy to present their credentials.

Please don't contact us to find out details of a particular therapist who has undergone training with us, as this is confidential information.

We no longer train people outside our own company.
