Body Part definitions for AE Hair Removal Treatments

Active Enzyme Hair Reduction is the greatest breakthrough in the hair removal industry since pulsed light, filling the void for people with light hair or dark skin, who are otherwise unsuitable for light-based treatments.

AE is quite new to Australia, following impressive results in Europe and North America, and as always, Reef Beauty is the leading the way by offering this new and exciting service.

How does Active Enzyme Hair Removal work?
Immediately after a professional waxing treatment, an enzyme solution is applied to the skin.

The solution is massaged down into the freshly exposed hair shafts to reach the dermal cells that produce new hairs.  The solution contains active enzymes that prevent the cell absorbing vital proteins, and without proteins, the dermal cell dies.

Is AE a permanent solution?
In real terms, you can expect as a minimum result, a vast reduction in visible hairs and a longer timeframe until regrowth appears.

The end result depends on how many treatments you opt to have.

Why doesn't AE remove all the hair at once?
Active Enzyme solutions are applied over the waxed area and massaged into the open follicles.

Hair grows in different cycles, usually between 6 and 12 months, and the enzymes will only penetrate hair shafts that have been exposed at the time of treatment.

For this reason, repeat treatments are needed to achieve the desired result.

Will I have to come back for top-up treatments?
Some hair can lay dormant for long periods or emerge for the first time as you arrive at a certain stage of life.  For that reason, you may find that top up treatments from time to time are beneficial.

What does the treatment entail?
An Active Enzyme Hair Reduction treatment is exactly the same as a wax treatment, except at the end, the AE solution is massaged into the skin instead of the usual Melaleuca solution.

The solutions are extremely expensive for us to buy (approx $10,000 a litre), and two different solutions are combined each treatment, which is why AE sessions cost significantly more than conventional waxing.

Does Active Enzyme Hair Removal work on everyone?
No.  Around 1 in 50 people treated will see little to no effect.

Scientists generally concede that they only know about 2% of how the body functions, and at this stage, the reasons behind this small percentage of ineffective hair removal treatments remain a mystery.

This is also why no reputable business will guarantee the results of any hair removal treatment.

What contraindications could prevent a treatment?
No contraindications are known for this type of treatment.

It can be used on light hair and skin, and dark hair and skin.  Please call us if you have any doubts or concerns you would like to discuss.

How many treatments will I need?
This varies, dependent on your genetic makeup and other factors.

We usually recommend 5 treatments to start with, followed by a free sixth treatment, and you can assess the progress at that point.

Pubic, chest, and facial hair are more resilient than other body hair, and may require 10 to 15 treatments.

How long should I leave between treatments?
Four to six weeks is optimum.  Hair needs to be 6mm long to ensure the hair can be successfully waxed.

Will my Therapist be male or female?
We have fifteen Therapists, thirteen female, two male, all of whom have undergone thorough training.

If you prefer a same-sex Therapist, please inform us when you book.  If you're a male seeking a Brazilian AE treatment, see below.

I'm male.  Will a Brazilian Active Enzyme treatment affect my sperm?
The enzymes only remain active for about 3 minutes and due to their nature, are unable to enter the bloodstream.

That said however, the choice is yours alone, and we make no guarantee as to the long term effects of Active Enzyme treatments on sperm.

I'm pregnant and my top lip is sprouting thick dark hair.  Can you help?
Unfortunately no - You'd be throwing your money away.

Hair growth during pregnancy is hormonal, and no amount of treatments, whether through us or someone else, will make the least difference.  In the case of pregnant clients, we recommend waxing until the end of term.

Our policy in general is not to treat pregnant clients.  While there is no scientific evidence to suggest that Active Enzymes can harm an unborn child, we prefer not to take the risk, especially in view of the fact that a treatment would serve little purpose.
